A study skills guide to help write a successful essay or paper. Aimed at
students, but perhaps useful to any writer. Why download them when you can
write them yourself?
Introduction
Pests and diseasesThere is a danger of which a word processing student may need to be aware. This is that getting too used to a keyboard may be a problem at exam time if you have got to write by hand (which is likely to be the case for most students). To counter this I recommend extensive hand-writing practice from revision time onwards. Do not be tempted to plan possible exam answers on the WP, do it by hand. Get used to doing all your planning and writing in exam type conditions using an old fashioned pen and paper. Word processors are supposed to be moving us towards a paperless environment. Anyone who uses one regularly will confirm that the opposite is true. Please spare a thought for the environment; don't print out lots of unnecessary drafts and copies. It wastes paper, ink and power. A note on loss and safety. Properly backed up disc copies can be stored in different locations (to minimise the risk from theft and fire), and easily updated. They are inherently safer than paper copies, as well as cheaper and 'greener'. However, this does rely on you having a proper backup procedure, and using it diligently. People do lose work on WPs, but it is easy not to if you follow the rules.
