After any election somebody announces the strange fact that a number of papers were spoiled. This makes the rest of us wonder exactly what it is that the Spoiler does to the ballot paper which renders it a non-vote. The term 'spoiled' is so mild that we might imagine that an extra crease had been introduced during the folding, or that a greasy thumb print had appeared. 2 write: "If I met the current PM I'd show them the meaning of the word cross."
