The Staunch is a voter who would vote for a rosette of the wrong colour if it had a rosette of the correct colour (or possibly an alsatian) stuck on it. This person cares not about the latest debates and wrangles on policy issues, because their parents, grand-parents, great-grand-parents and great-grand-parents' pet dog all voted that way. If it was good enough for them (which it probably wasn't) it's good enough for the Staunch.

The Staunch tells us "That's the candidate who'll get my vote" when the appropriately coloured campaign leaflet hits the doormat, regardless of the fact that the enclosed manifesto has a clause which involves a ban on breathing in public.

Many pubs employ a Staunch who hangs around at weekends offering uninformed opinions for the amusement of the public.
